Tel Aviv in the summer is a hot, muggy, sweaty congested metropolis situated on the shores of the Mediterranean. The commercial center of the country, it is a vast assemblage of tree-lined thoroughfares with countless restaurants, cafes and markets. The best known is Shouk HaCarmel, near Shenkin Street. I would always buy fresh carrot juice and feast on fresh bread, nuts and figs, if in season. The shouk then leads on to south Tel Aviv, which has recently been gentrified into a number of hip artist communities, restaurants, gallaries and magnificant old terraced residential buildings. Alenby Street, on the way to the market, was always a favorite destination, as was King George Street, where the multitudes would come to gather, promenade, shop and bustle about.
