The Kotel, or HaKotel HaMa'aravi, known as the Western Wall, is the physical manifestation of what remains of the Second Temple, erected by King Herod circa 20BC, and destroyed in 70CE by Emperor Nero's Roman Legion led by Vespasian. It is a series of massive rose limestone blocks, masterfully cut and arranged in perfect alignment for 57 meters on the western flank of what has become known as the Temple Mount. An ancient wall, the 2000 year old chisel marks still visible, it serves as the sacred nexus of the Jewish Faith. Architectually the wall subtends the third most sacred site in the Muslim Faith, the al-Aqsa Mosque or Al-haram Al-qudsī Ash-sharīf. With permission, a photographer can enter this world of prayer, and capture men in conversation with their Maker.
