Shouk Mahane Yehuda, Jerusalem

Shouk Mahane Yehuda is a large open air market located just off of Jaffo Road, in West Jerusalem. It has unfortunately been the target of several terrorist acts, but the market community always somehow rebounds, stronger than before. One can find anything in the stalls from terrific fresh produce, to fish, meat, eggs, spices... It was my habit upon arriving in Jerusalem by bus to always make my way there, walking up the busy Jaffo Road, to buy hot pastries or perhaps a bag of almonds or whatever the fruit of the season. I would then make my way by foot to the old city for a day's worth of photography. The stall owners were rightfully proud of their wares and never hesitated to allow me permission to take photos. Photographing people necessitates direct dialogue and interaction. It can not be avoided. Sometimes I would leave with a free sack of fruit to boot.
