I had the good fortune of living in Haifa from 1995 to 1999. Haifa the Red, a socialist experiment where both Arab and Jew coexist, where commerce not politics dictates the day and ever present the magnificant view on top of Stella Maris, situated on top of the real Mount Carmel, where Napoleon burried his fallen soldiers from the battle of Acco in 1799. Haifa is a city built on terraces, one set overlooking the other, connected by old limestone staircases threading the neighborhoods together. At the top is the University of Haifa, the rich enclave of Denia, then Ahuza and finally French Carmel and the Dan Panorama Hotel. At the end is Stella Maris, overlooking the sea. Descending the staircases, one passes through a number of successive residential communities, until at last one is deposited on Herzl Street, a major commercial area. Further down is the Haifa Shouk, and at the bottom near the port Yom Hatzmaout Street, where industry rules, among yet another series of open markets.
